The first January meeting is called the organizational meeting. Board members are tasked with choosing a chair and vice chair.

I was thankful to be nominated for Chairman by Commissioner Allison Miedema. I served as Chairman for the past two years. It is an honor to serve the people of Ottawa County and lead the board, along with Commissioner Sylvia Rhodea, who served as Vice Chairwoman from 2023-2024.

I explained I was willing to serve and continue promoting truth in the public square.

Worldview matters, and the ideology of an individual is an important factor when voting for a chairman. The new board majority elected John Teeples with seven votes, and I received four votes. I voted “Moss” during the roll call.

Shortly after, Commissioner Kendra Wenzel nominated me to be Vice Chairman. Having a Chairman who is a new board member and Vice Chairman who is a previous board member (especially the former chair) would make for a smooth transition and increase collaboration and unity on the board. The new board majority voted 7 to 4 to elect Josh Brugger as Vice Chair. I voted “Moss” during the roll call.

Worldview Matters

The people of Ottawa County should be aware of the ideologies driving the individuals on the Board. People should be aware of their actions and votes. Board members make policy and budget decisions related to a $300 million annual budget. The Board can either promote what is good and righteous, or what is harmful and unrighteous (like DEI). I look forward to writing and speaking about this more in the future!

Abraham Lincoln

Truth is not relative. Truth is absolute, and comes from God and is found in the Bible. Abraham Lincoln once said:

“My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”

My commissioner comment at the end of the meeting was based on Romans 12:2, which says:

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

My hope for the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is that each member will seek the Truth and remember that we are in a spiritual war. Our beliefs, worldviews, ideologies, and actions will impact 300,000 people living in our beautiful county. By working together, embracing reality, and discussing truth & facts with humility, we will protect the people and produce positive results for all people.

“We must be ruthless with ideas, but gentle with people.”
